The WITS League offers competitive, weekday, team-based women’s doubles tennis, as well as a singles league. Play takes place across two seasons each year – Spring and Autumn.
Our aim is to ensure balanced competition organised into eight divisions based on playing ability.
WITS divisions of play
The skill definitions below serve as a guide to the eight divisions of play in the WITS League. Players without a USTA or ITN ranking may apply for an assessment with a WITS-approved coach. Following the assessment, the Committee will work to place you on a team that best matches your skill set.
-
Premier A
Many Premier A players have competed as nationally ranked juniors and are top-level competitors with a wide variety of shots, strong footwork, power, and spin. They demonstrate excellent anticipation and consistent shot-making, regularly hitting winners or forcing errors from short balls. Players can successfully execute lobs, drop shots, half volleys, and overhead smashes, and deliver second serves with both depth and spin.
-
Premier B
These highly skilled players consistently execute difficult shots while using power and spin to their advantage. They adapt their game plan to different opponents, vary their serves, and place their second serves effectively. With dependable strokes and strong directional and depth control on both forehand and backhand, they can produce successful groundstrokes, volleys, lobs, overheads, and approach shots.
-
A Division
Players in this division demonstrate power and consistency, varying strategies and styles in competitive situations. They can maintain dependable shots under pressure, have sound footwork, and control shot depth to move opponents around the court. Their first serves are powerful and accurate, second serves are well-placed, and they can approach the net successfully on serve.
-
Alpha Division
Alpha Division players have dependable forehand and backhand strokes and can execute a variety of shots, including lobs, overheads, approach shots, and volleys. They place first serves effectively and can force errors. Rarely out of position in doubles play, they are reliable and strong competitors on court.
-
B Division
B Division offers a more challenging level of play to help players develop match skills further. These players produce dependable strokes with good directional control on moderately paced shots. They continue to work on depth, variety, and teamwork in doubles.
-
Beta Division
Beta Division players are improving stroke dependability, depth, and shot variety, with increasing ability to direct shots away from opponents. While they cannot yet force errors on serve, they consistently execute forehand and backhand volleys and often have several years of playing experience.
-
C Division
C Division players have achieved basic stroke dependability and directional control on reachable shots, including forehand and backhand volleys, but still lack depth and variety. Serves are more reliable, though directional control and power remain limited.
-
D Division
D Division players can place shots with moderate success and sustain rallies at slow to medium pace but are still developing comfort with all strokes. They are learning to judge ball trajectory, have limited court coverage, and struggle with power and control. Many are newcomers to competitive tennis.
The divisions play on the following days
Mondays: Premier A & Premier B
Tuesdays: A & ALPHA
Wednesdays: B & BETA
Thursdays: C & D
Each team coordinates their own court location for home matches.
